Common Myths About Robotic Surgery, Debunked

Robotic surgery, also known as robot-assisted surgery, is a state-of-the-art surgical solution that enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with exceptional precision and care. There are many incorrect myths circulating, however, about what the procedure entails.

That’s why Advanced Surgical Associates of Northern Minnesota’s board-certified general surgeon, Dr. John Bollins, and his staff are taking the opportunity to discuss robotic surgery and help debunk the myths with facts. Continue reading to discover the practical applications of this groundbreaking technique.

Myths about robotic surgery, and the facts that debunk them

Here are several myths about robotic surgery, along with the facts that correct them.

Myth #1: The surgery is performed by a robot

FACT: The surgery is NEVER performed by a robot. The robotic system, such as the da Vinci platform, is completely controlled by the surgeon through a highly sensitive computer console, with the surgical team next to the operating table. The robotic arms merely assist in navigating small spaces inside the patient and provide the surgeon with superb fine motor control.

Myth #2: Robotic surgery is a new invention

FACT: The FDA approved the da Vinci robotic surgical system in 2000, giving it a quarter-century track record of positive results.

Myth #3: Robotic systems aren’t in widespread use

FACT: The da Vinci system is used in hospitals across all 50 US states, as well as in 64 countries worldwide.

Myth #4: Robotic systems can’t perform many different surgeries

FACT: The da Vinci system alone performs procedures addressing a large number of conditions in specialties that include cardiac, gynecologic, urologic, pediatric, and general surgery. And almost 75% of prostate cancer surgeries in the US use this system.

In addition, more women now choose robotic surgery for a minimally invasive hysterectomy than either a conventional laparoscopy or a vaginal procedure.

Myth #5: Robotic systems perform open as well as laparoscopic surgeries

FACT: Robotic systems were created to assist not with traditional open surgeries (long incisions), but to aid in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgeries, helping to navigate in areas where the human hands are too large to fit comfortably. As a result, these systems are associated with less pain and postoperative bleeding, fewer infections, and more positive outcomes.
